Darrell Brooks was found guilty of six counts of first-degree intentional homicide as he crashed his SUV into a crowd watching a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin on November 21, 2021, killing six people and wounding dozens.

Brooks was charged with 61 recklessly endangering safety with a deadly weapon, six counts of a fatal hit-and-run; two counts of felony bail jumping; and one count of misdemeanor domestic abuse.

He represented himself in the court and was antagonistic the entire time, frequently making absurd and pointless arguments with the judge. However, Brooks sat silently on Wednesday as his guilty verdict was read in front of all victim’s families.

He defended himself in court and close the argument by stating, “I’ve never heard of someone trying to purposefully damage someone while trying to blow their horn.”Authorities claimed that Brooks assaulted Erika Patterson, his ex-girlfriend, before the vehicular killings.

His Sentencing Charges Explained

Darell was sentenced to life in prison after a circuit court jury in Waukesha, Wisconsin found him guilty of 26 of 76 felony offenses, including six counts of intentional killing.

He was charged with purposefully driving his car through police barriers and into crowds of spectators at the annual parade in Waukesha, which is roughly 15 miles (25 km) west of downtown Milwaukee.

The sentencing hearing was started on November 15, 2022, when the relatives of killed and injured victims confronted Brooks who was seated at a courtroom table in orange prison garb and a surgical mask.

Darell Brooks’s six victims include Tamara Durand, 52, Wilhelm Hospel, 81, Jane Kulich, 52, LeAnna “Lee” Owen, 71, Virginia “Ginny” Sorenson, 79 and Jackson Sparks, 8. 

More than 60 people were injured in the Waukesha Christmas parade attack as thousands of people were gathered to watch a Christmas parade.
